This minidress is so much fun! Very mod, very 60s – very red. And it totally works 🙂
You could wear this just as shown – casual sandals, red lipstick, and out the door. Or take tease that hair into a beehive (I’m absolutely seeing a 60s do with this). Or pair it with black tights and it’ll be warm for winter as well as cool 🙂
This is what vintage ought to be – wearable and smart but also fun and sassy. I found this fab dress at Psychedelic Pinup on Etsy. Even the name is funky and fun! Esther, the curator / owner, has clear, informative pics and you know how important that is when you’re buying online. And she’s got some terrific finds – vintage lingerie, party dresses, and even a Sale section! And her items are separated by size – so you can find things that will fit YOU.
Go check her shop – you’re going to thank me!
I just wanted to show you a few examples of what you can do with these sweet little blackened brass heart charms that I mentioned a few days ago. Showing is always better than telling, don’t you think?
And I use these examples only to say hey, there are lots of things you can use to turn these little hearts into something really special. Look around your craft room. Try those few leftover beads you had. Wire them to hang with the hearts, or add a cluster to a necklace focal.
I have the hearts in golden raw brass, too – I think they were originally intended as stamping blanks. They’re fairly thin so it’s best to stamp on a very smooth hard surface like a jewelry anvil – but it works terrifically when you do that. So: add pearls or charms. Or stamp your own message.
Or just use the hearts “as is”. They’re fun, they’re inexpensive, they’re a little boho. What’s not to love?
I recently found some smallish, adorable brass heart charms, both golden raw brass ones and deeply blackened hearts. I think the possibilities with these are endless!
Well, okay, maybe not endless. But varied, and interesting. I was thinking how cool these would look, paired with a vivid glass charm in red, or maybe a hand-wired white pearl dangle. I’m going to try a few ideas and will post them here later.
Heart charms are always in style, you know? They’re feminine and seasonless – and for easy, fun earrings? A win 🙂
Just one more little post and then I’ll shut up, really. About the emerald green, I mean. But that darling dress (see post here) just reminded me – again – how wonderful emerald green is.
So, a few more colors and shapes of sheer, sparkling emerald green jewels 🙂
With the classic silk dress, you could wear tiny oval earrings – or chandeliers down to *there*. Or a simple teardrop necklace. Or an armful of bracelets (right now, I think that’d be the most fun – ask me again next week!)
But you see what I mean? Gorgeous color. Easy to use. Inexpensive (really). This is a win!
Let me put it this way – this dress is a fine example of why vintage is so wonderful. I don’t even have to talk a lot: let’s take a look.
Such a simple dress. And what that means is, you can wear is so many ways. In summer, absolutely! A pair of flipflops or heels. A fab pair of boho earrings. In fall or winter (like, right now) – toss on a bright red cardigan. Dark green, or red, or black, high heeled Jimmy Choos (or if you’re like me, hunt down some fabulous thrifted heels).
I wouldn’t wear the classic pearl necklace, myself – I’d toss on a long tribal thing, or a multicolor vintage Haskell (Haskell *style*, which I would fake, and it would be great) – or maybe floral tattoos covering my arms (fake, or temporary, but oh well) and just add earrings.
You see what I mean? You can wear this dress anywhere, day or night, and it will look good. Belt it or don’t. High heels or flats. And by the way – they don’t usually tell you this, but silk is uber washable.
I found this treasure at Sydneys Vintage on Etsy. Not only does Syd, the curator/owner, have some GREAT party finds, she also has a coupon code for 20% off!
And this dress – this simple, classic, easy to wear (anywhere) dress – even before using the coupon – is $27.00. Yes. Twenty Seven Dollars plus shipping. Go grab it. Or go shopping for other fab finds. Do it. You’ll thank me.
And back to ‘ordinary’ life (for which we are blessed!) Just a simple thing today, I wanted to show off these sheer, faceted emerald glass teardrop jewels:
because they are so appropriate for the season – and also flattering, pretty, and easy to use. All things that are nice when your life is busy to bursting, and you never have enough money, and you have the luxury of a party to go to!
Like I said, we are blessed.
I can’t do a “regular” post today. I am heartsick over the violence in Paris, all those innocent people killed by monsters. I’ll return to my ordinary, everyday posts soon. But today, I have to share a beautiful tweet I saw.
The hashtag is #Parisisaboutlife. I retweeted it here.
In case it’s hard to read, the simple cartoon says, “Friends from the whole world, thank you for #Pray for Paris, but we don’t need more religion! Our faith goes to music! Kisses! Life! Champagne and Joy! #Paris is about life”.
Paris is about life.
We don’t need more religion. We need more compassion, more love, more jobs, more education, more respect for each other and all life.
If you’re so inclined, go share your thoughts on Twitter. Tell Parisians we care, even if we don’t know how to fix it.
Or “ornaments”. I’ve mentioned this before but it’s so simple, and adds such a nice variation, that I wanted to highlight it. Take a simple glass jewel – in this case, a navy blue (montana sapphire) 10mm round. Put it in a silver setting (or pick up a pair in my Etsy shop already in settings. Then add the simple silver-plated leaf charms (yes you can get those too and they’re very inexpensive).
Voila! A delicate, interesting earring, or pendant on a silver chain. Add more jewels or pearls if you like – or just it just “as is”. You see what I mean? It’s pretty, it’s inexpensive, and you can tailor the colors and details exactly as you like.
DIY: that’s the way it’s supposed to be 😉
I first thought of “party dress”, because add a pair of high-heeled slippers (don’t you lvoe the vintage jargon? pumps, or stilettos, or whatever you want to call them) – and a fab pair of earrings and you will ROCK this dress. Or it will rock you. **
But then I thought: non-matching (but similar color) bridesmaid dresses, which if I was planning another wedding for me that is totally what I would be doing, so that my girls culd have dresses they love that were also coordinated with what I wanted 🙂
And this dress:
How could you not love this dress? Look at the details! The wonderful shirring, the little bows, the finely-bound armholes, the full skirt! Modest but sexy too. Flirty and fun.
I found it at Jupe De Jour vintage boutique on Etsy, and this darling shop is just full of vintage finds you need to know about. A gorgeous red cheongsam. A pair of vintage brown pumps that believe me if they were my size would already be sold.
A vintage cowboy hat! Go see. You’ll thank me.
Sometimes a pretty color is all you need to make your jewelry shine. I don’t mean harsh bling (though that can be totally fun) – I mean a pretty, soft, seductive color.
Sheer colors are looking wonderful to me these days. The color really is the star of the show. It’s a little quieter, and it just feels classy, you know what I mean?
Plus: pretty, affordable, easy to use. All the usual reasons that DIY glass jewels are a good way to go.
Plus Christmas and the holidays are on the way. I’m just saying.
